BOXING CLUB START THE NEW SEASON IN STYLE

On the evening of Thursday 13th November the London District TA & Army Boxing Club staged their 2008 home show at the Grove Park TA Centre in front of a capacity audience consisting of over 400 military guests and members of the civilian community.Top ranking military officers including Major General William Cubitt CBE and Major General Andrew Gregory joined with former World Champion boxer Lloyd Honeyghan in order to give their support to this very popular community focussed event. Tough opposition was provided by local clubs against the UKs first and only Territorial Army amateur boxing club.

The event started with Captain Robbie Wilmont giving an update on the progression of the club since its formation just over a year ago. He went on to emphasise their fund raising efforts to date and explained that as a result of various charity boxing events last season they had managed to accumulate enough funding to be able to make a presentation to Help for Heroes for the sum of a staggering £33,348.65. This season the club will be focussing its fund raising efforts in support of the Royal British Legion which is commemorating the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.The audience were urged to give their support to this worthy cause which was duly noted by their very generous contributions towards the organised raffle and charity auction.

The evening progressed with a wide variety of first class bouts of boxing combined with military tradition and ceremony which gave the event a totally unique style of its own.In order to make the show as diverse as possible a junior bout and two South East London Class A finals were added to the programme. The first military contender into the ring was 2nd Lieutenant Nadia Soliman who put up a very determined effort but was narrowly beaten by Tanya Pring from the Rusthall & Tunbridge Wells ABC. This was followed by an outstanding display of grit and determination which seen Gunner F Hawkin losing the majority decision in favour of R Wright from the Fitzroy Lodge ABC. Gunner J Williams also put up a valiant effort but again lost a close call against L Lee of Bromley & Downham ABC. Fitzroy Lodge contender A Mickalides managed a narrow victory against Signaller J Wilder in his first ever bout of amateur boxing which was closely monitored by his trainers, Captain Tom Roach and Captain Andy Haines. Lance Corporal Mick Domingez then put on an impressive display to defeat Billy Clarkson of Cray Valley ABC, this is the second time the two have met with the same outcome as a result. The evenings boxing was brought to a conclusion when Gunner Harry Finch embarked on three rounds of toe to toe action against W Williams from Fitzroy Lodge which brought the crowd to their feet in appreciation. The judges deemed it to be the best bout of the event and the victorious Gunner Finch proudly received the additional best boxer trophy from his Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Waymouth RA.

Afterwards at a photo shoot in the club gymnasium, Major General William Cubitt CBE presented Meritorious Service Awards to the clubs three founder members, Captain’s Andy Haines, Tom Roach and Robbie Wilmont.

with second successful annual home show now behind them club management would like thank all those helped make it happen. The final word must go the boxers themselves who have trained relentlessly their own free time order to prepare compete in this highly demanding and courageous sport. ww.londdistboxingclub.org
